The Story of Louis: Aging with Trust and Connection

For Louis, life has never followed a typical path—but through trust, patience, and quiet connection, he and his pet parent have built something deeply meaningful together.

In this conversation, Louis’s pet parent reflects on their journey together—from navigating life with sight and hearing loss to building a life rooted in trust, routine, and presence. Now nearing 15, Louis continues to show that a fulfilling life isn’t defined by limitations, but by connection, resilience, and the small moments shared every day.

Question 01

Tell us about Louis and the special bond you’ve built together over the years. What makes your relationship unique?

I never expected to have a second dog, but when I met Louis—who was seven at the time and being fostered by a friend—I immediately recognized his gentle, unassuming nature. Despite losing his eyes, he carried a quiet acceptance that stayed with me. I knew he needed a home and a family, and four weeks later, he moved in.

He has taught me so much about patience and living fully in the present. The trauma he experienced before I adopted him took nearly two years for us to work through together, but every challenging moment was worth it. It’s truly a privilege to be his eyes and ears. Every day, I try to give him the best life possible—even if it looks different from that of most dogs.

Question 02

How have your routines or the ways you spend time together evolved as Louis has gotten older?

Louis is nearing 15 and has recently lost his hearing, along with his love for car rides. We’ve replaced those outings with time spent outdoors, where he enjoys the breeze and the richness of scent—it’s a wonderful way for him to experience the world.

His hearing loss has affected me more than him. At first, I worried he might feel isolated without verbal communication. But over time, we’ve adapted. We now communicate through touch and the routines he’s created for himself. He seems content, grounded in familiarity and connection.

Question 03

What does helping Louis live a happy, fulfilling life look like for you today?

Making sure Louis feels comfortable and confident every day is my top priority—especially when it comes to his safety. With both sight and hearing loss, I guide him through walks and unfamiliar environments, acting as his support system.

What continues to amaze me is how capable he is. People are often surprised to learn he’s blind because of how confidently he navigates our neighborhood. He knows exactly when to turn toward home, where the steps begin, and where to stand so I can open the door.

At home, he’s happiest resting on one of his many beds, enjoying a treat, and simply being in a space that feels safe and familiar.

Question 04

What originally led you to add Leap Years® to Louis’s routine, and why have you continued using it over the years?

After my 19-year-old Havanese passed away, Louis became unexpectedly stressed. She had been a quiet presence in his life for seven years, and her absence deeply affected him. His holistic vet recommended Leap Years® to help support his vitality, curiosity, and cognitive engagement.

Within just a few weeks, I began to see a shift. His spirit returned—he became more aware of his surroundings, more engaged with people and other dogs, and more responsive to the world around him. Walks, which had lost their appeal during his grief, became something he looked forward to again.

The change was noticeable, even to our neighbors. His renewed vitality and enthusiasm were remarkable. I truly believe Leap Years® has played a role in supporting his overall enjoyment and day-to-day engagement, which is why he continues to take it today.

Question 05

What are some of the everyday moments with Louis that bring you the most joy and remind you why these years together are so special?

With Louis, it’s the quiet moments that matter most.

He’s an incredible snuggler, and physical closeness has become even more meaningful now that he can’t hear. Sitting together in a comfortable chair, feeling him completely relaxed—that’s one of my favorite parts of the day.

I also love watching him experience new things. The first time he stepped onto a beach and felt sand between his toes was unforgettable—it was clear he had never felt anything like it before.

His routines bring him confidence and security, and it’s been amazing to watch him create them. He learned his way around the house within a week. He only barks when someone enters, paws at the door when he needs to go out, and stands patiently by his bowl when it’s time for his medication—waiting for it to be delivered with cream cheese.

Since arriving in 2018, Louis has grown from a stoic, independent dog into one who is more engaged and connected. Seeing his interest in the world—and in our relationship—continue to grow is the greatest sign that he feels safe, happy, and trusting. That connection is everything.

Louis’s story is a reminder that healthy aging isn’t about avoiding change—it’s about adapting with intention, care, and connection. Through every stage, the moments you create together are what matter most.
