General FAQs
Aging is caused by genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. The way to slow aging varies from dog to dog because it depends on individual health parameters. You can slow the aging process in your dog through addressing medical needs, lifestyle changes, supplements and providing a rich environment for engagement.
Healthy aging means that your dog stays strong and flexible with age. Your dog feels vital, stays cognitively engaged, and doesnโt suffer from age-related diseases and decline. Healthy aging depends on specific genes, epigenetics, blood chemistry and more. Just like for humans, regular exercise, healthy diet, and veterinary checkups, including bloodwork and discussion of goals for your dog go a long way to support healthy aging.
With almost two years on the market, over 300,000 daily administrations have been given to dogs. No single side event has been recorded at a rate higher than rare (>1 in 1000). In a clinical trial, there was no difference in type or rate of occurrence of side events compared with placebo controls.
With over 300,000 daily administrations, we have come to understand the following side effects:
Gastrointestinal โ vomiting, dark stool or diarrhea
Dermatologicalย - itchiness
Neurological โ agitation, drowsiness, weakness in hind leg(s), difficulty walking
It is not always possible to reliably estimate the frequency of side effects or establish a causal relationship to exposure to Leap Years.
Puppies and young dogs (less than 50% of their expected lifespan based on breed) do not need Leap Years. Young dogs have adequate stores of NAD+ and would not have many senescent cells unless there was concomitant inflammatory disease. A dog would not need Leap Years until adult maturity. NAD+ concentrations start to wane in middle age. Specific diseases should be discussed with your veterinarian.
No. Leap Years has been tested in dogs only and is not labeled for human use. Please keep the soft chews out of reach of children.

LY-D6 is a golden color because it is a combination of the NAD+ booster and senolytic and is administered on two consecutive days per month.
LY-D2 is brown and it contains the daily NAD booster only.
Leap Years is a monthly regimen. On two consecutive days, you give the light-colored combination soft chews (from the bag inside the bottle (NAD booster and senolytic)). Daily after that, you give the dark-colored (NAD booster) soft chews (in the bottle) all the rest of the days of the month. We recommend starting the combination (light-colored) soft chews at the beginning of the month so it is easy to remember but you may start them on any two consecutive days of the month.
It takes about 4-6 weeks for senescent cells to develop, so the light-colored combination soft chew (NAD booster and senolytic) knocks down the population at the start of each month. Then, the dark-colored soft chew (NAD booster) supports the use of NAD for the healthy cells for the remainder of the month.
If your dog eats a full bottle of chews, please contact support@leapyears.com or callย +1 888-850-1930 during the hours of 9am to 6pm Eastern time M-F. We have data from two different customers whose dogs ate a full bottle of chews as well as a safety study in which 10 times and 30 times the daily dosages was tested.
Data from two dogs (customers of Leap Years) showed that after eating a whole bottle of chews at one time, the following effects lasted between 24-48 hours with full recovery:
The dogs became lethargic, drank more water than usual and did not want to eat for just over 24 hours.ย One dog developed diarrhea which lasted a little more than 24 hours, the other dog developed dark, formed stools. Both owners fed a bland diet and both dogs recovered in just over 48 hours. One dog with a history of laryngeal paralysis, showed transient โhackingโ between 24 and 48 hours. Further veterinary care was not needed, and issues resolved on their own.ย If you seek veterinary care, we invite your veterinarian to reach out to us with any questions they may have.
The safety study conducted in dogs with daily dosages of 10X and 30X over 14 days showed no changes in clinical signs, blood hematology and chemistry, and organ pathology. At the 30X dose administered daily over 14 days, transient loose bowel movements, lower activity and lower body weights were observed in some dogs.

Yes, the monthly regimen is two consecutive days of the combination light-colored soft chews (NAD booster and senolytic) and daily dark-colored (NAD booster ) soft chews all the rest of the days of the month. We recommend starting the combination (light-colored) soft chews at the beginning of the month so it is easy to remember but you may start them on any two consecutive days of the month. For example, if you give the combination light-colored chews on the 9th and 10th of the month, just remember that those are the days for the light-colored soft chews the next month with the dark-colored (NAD booster) daily for all of the other days of the month.
If you miss a few days, pick up where you left off and finish the daily regimen through the end of the month. You may give the light-colored combination soft chew on the same days next month. The NAD booster is given daily based on pharmacokinetic studies in dogs which showed the body's normal daily NAD levels and the half-life of Leap Years.
Knowing that we wanted dogs with food allergy, food sensitivity or food intolerance to be able to take Leap Years, we carefully considered any protein that would be in the soft chews. Since our canine palatability testing showed beef to be the favorite, we chose to use a synthetic beef flavor. This means that no animal proteins (common allergens) are included in Leap Years.
The inactive ingredients are: apple pectin cellulose powder, brewerโs dried yeast, FlavorPal NA 1271 (non-animal beef flavor), flaxseed oil, flaxseed powder, potato starch, rice bran, sorbic acid, sunflower lecithin, vegetable glycerin, vit C and vit E. The small quantity of brewerโs yeast contains a small amount of gluten.
The nutritional content of a Leap Years soft chew is: carbohydrate (2.46 g), fat (<0.5 g) and protein (<0.5 g).
Unfortunately, we do not provide samples of Leap Years to try, but we're sure that the thousands of dogs enjoying Leap Years daily can attest to the quality flavor! One point to consider - we can only accept returns/refunds of unopened bottles (for safety reasons) so please order responsibly if you have a picky dog.
LY-D2 (brown) is 200mg of an NAD+ booster.
LY-D6 (golden) is 600 mg of a combination of NAD+ booster and senolytic. The inactive ingredients are: apple pectin cellulose powder, brewerโs dried yeast, FlavorPal NA 1271 (non-animal beef flavor), flaxseed oil, flaxseed powder, potato starch, rice bran, sorbic acid, sunflower lecithin, vegetable glycerin, vit C and vit E.
Leap Years soft chews are primarily carbohydrate (2.46 g), with <0.5 g fat and <0.5 g protein.
We manufacture the chews in the US with globally sourced ingredients. It is worth noting that Leap Years chews are GMP certified (All parts of the supply chain are subjected to FDA audit). You can read more about the quality and what it means to be GMP certified on our website here.
No. The family of NAD boosters includes NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), NR (nicotinamide riboside), NAR (nicotinic acid riboside) and NA (nicotinic acid). These NAD boosters are chemically modified in the body to be converted into NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). NAD is composed of vitamin B3, a sugar and a phosphate. NAD is an important cofactor for many cellular processes. NAD is important to aging, not only because its concentration wanes with age, but it is involved in the activation of sirtuins, enzymes important in DNA repair, controlling inflammation and antioxidant activity, important cellular mechanisms of aging.
