Q&A with Mango & Abby’s Pet Parent
These responses reflect Mango and Abby’s pet parent’s personal observations.
- In a few words, how would you describe Mango and Abby’s distinct personalities that make them so special?
Mango and Abby are both special and unique in their own ways. Mango is a certified therapy dog – we are a therapy dog team for pediatrics and NICU at our local Kaiser Permanente Hospital. Abby is our playful and athletic girl. She loves to play fetch and swim. If she was a human she’d make the Olympic diving team because she loves to dive/jump off our pool deck into the pool!
2. What’s a quirky habit or trait of Mango’s or Abby’s that’s so uniquely “them” it always brings a smile to your face?
Mango listens to the commercials on the TV. He can tell just what commercials have dogs in them by the music. He will come running from another room to say hi to the TV dog! Abby loves to spin in circles when she wants to play pool fetch.
3. How do Mango and Abby spend their days—do they have a favorite spot to relax or a routine they can’t get enough of?
When we are home, Mango and Abby love to lay on the cool floor tile and hangout. When we spend time in our backyard, they will join us on the outdoor furniture with us.
4. How do Mango and Abby interact with other pets or people at home—what’s their unique way of building connections?
Mango is super human focused, which is why he is an amazing therapy dog. He loves visiting patients and especially loves when he can do a “bed visit” – he’ll cuddle up and bring smiles to everyone he visits. He’s funny too because as we make our way through the hospital, when patients, staff or anyone nearby walks by without saying hi or petting him, he’ll give them a look….like he’s saying “you forgot to stop and say hi!”. Abby is also very friendly, although she prefers to visit with anyone who visits our home vs. the outside environments.
5. With a focus on preventive care for their middle years, why did you choose Leap Years to support Mango and Abby’s cellular health?
Mango and Abby are our family, and we support them with the best possible choices to help them thrive.
6. Reflecting on your time together, what’s been the toughest challenge you’ve faced with Mango or Abby, and how did it strengthen your relationship?
Mango has had a couple of health issues, that landed him in the doggie ICU – but we’ve worked through them with his outstanding veterinary care. Most was related to severe allergies, but he also sees an animal dermatologist and is doing great. Abby has been very healthy with no issues. Both dogs have great demeanors and we never had to deal with any behavior issues with either of them.

7. What’s a memorable moment with Mango or Abby that perfectly captures their vibrant spirit?
Mango just loves people. He was recently part of the special prom that Kaiser put on for chronically ill children/teens. It was such a special event and made me feel like it captured everything that I would ever want/hope for to accomplish with a therapy dog. So rewarding to see how Mango brings joy to others.
8. Do you and Mango or Abby have a daily ritual, like a walk or cuddle session, that feels special and deepens your bond?
Abby loves to swim. We call it her “swim swim” time. She loves to have time with us when we throw the toy into the pool.

9. In one heartfelt sentence, how would you sum up your bond with Mango and Abby?
Unconditional love that goes beyond understanding.
10. What’s one story that perfectly captures who Mango or Abby is as a Labradoodle?
Mango recognizes people and doesn’t forget them. Whether it’s on a neighborhood walk where he sees someone regularly, or a patient that he hasn’t seen for a while and then they are back in the hospital. He will greet them with a special hello, like he’s saying….”great to see you my friend”. If he hasn’t seen someone in a while when we are on a walk and then he sees them ….he gets so excited, it’s like he’s saying “hey, there’s my buddy, I want to go say hi.”
