Your First Questions, Answered

Common FAQs

Transient side effects reported in <1% of dogs: digestive upset after golden chew (reduced appetite, soft/dark stools, gas, vomiting, diarrhea). Facial itchiness in conjunction with intake of high Vitamin B3 from other sources. Rare reports of transient weakness in hind leg(s), difficulty walking and sleepiness after golden soft chew, lasting between 6-48 hours. All side effects resolved with discontinuation.

If your dog eats a full bottle of chews, please contact support@leapyears.com or call +1 888-850-1930 during the hours of 9am to 6pm Eastern time M-F. We have data from two different customers whose dogs ate a full bottle of chews as well as a safety study in which 10 times and 30 times the daily dosages was tested.

Data from two dogs (customers of Leap Years) showed that after eating a whole bottle of chews at one time, the following effects lasted between 24-48 hours with full recovery:

  • The dogs became lethargic, drank more water than usual and did not want to eat for just over 24 hours.
  • One dog developed diarrhea which lasted a little more than 24 hours, the other dog developed dark, formed stools. Both owners fed a bland diet and both dogs recovered in just over 48 hours.
  • One dog with a history of laryngeal paralysis, showed transient “hacking” between 24 and 48 hours. Further veterinary care was not needed, and issues resolved on their own.

If you seek veterinary care, we invite your veterinarian to reach out to us with any questions they may have.

The safety study conducted in dogs with daily dosages of 10X and 30X over 14 days showed no changes in clinical signs, blood hematology and chemistry, and organ pathology. At the 30X dose administered daily over 14 days, transient loose bowel movements, lower activity and lower body weights were observed in some dogs.

Yes, the monthly regimen is two consecutive days of the combination golden soft chew(s) (NAD booster and senolytic) and daily brown (NAD booster ) soft chew(s) all the rest of the days of the month (days 3-31). We recommend starting the combination (golden) soft chew(s) at the beginning of the month so it is easy to remember but you may start them on any two consecutive days of the month. For example, if you give the combination golden chew(s) on the 9th and 10th of the month, just remember that those are the days for the golden soft chew(s) the next month with the brown (NAD booster) daily for all of the other days of the month. Occasional missed administration will not impact the benefits. Daily, consistent use is recommended for sustained benefits; resume the regular regimen as soon as possible.

General FAQs

Aging is caused by genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. The way to slow aging varies from dog to dog because it depends on individual health parameters. You can slow the aging process in your dog through addressing medical needs, lifestyle changes, supplements and providing a rich environment for engagement.

Healthy aging means that your dog stays strong and flexible with age. Your dog feels vital, stays cognitively engaged, and doesn’t suffer from age-related diseases and decline. Healthy aging depends on specific genes, epigenetics, blood chemistry and more. Just like for humans, regular exercise, healthy diet, and veterinary checkups, including bloodwork and discussion of goals for your dog go a long way to support healthy aging.

With almost two years on the market, over 300,000 daily administrations have been given to dogs. No single side event has been recorded at a rate higher than rare (>1 in 1000). In a clinical trial, there was no difference in type or rate of occurrence of side events compared with placebo controls.

With over 300,000 daily administrations, the following side effects have been reported to us:

Gastrointestinal – vomiting, dark stool or diarrhea

Dermatological  - itchiness

Neurological – agitation, drowsiness, weakness in hind leg(s), difficulty walking

These effects are temporary. It is not always possible to reliably estimate the frequency of side effects or establish a causal relationship to Leap Years.

Puppies and young dogs (less than 50% of their expected lifespan based on breed) do not need Leap Years. Young dogs have adequate stores of NAD+ and would not have many senescent cells unless there was concomitant inflammatory disease. A dog would not need Leap Years until adult maturity. NAD+ concentrations start to wane in middle age. Specific diseases should be discussed with your veterinarian.

No. Leap Years has been tested in dogs only and is not labeled for human use. Please keep the soft chews out of reach of children.
